Life offers countless ways to connect with nature, challenge ourselves, and find peace. For Peter and me, our shared adventures have become a source of joy and growth. From the quiet focus of golfing to the calm waters of boating and fishing, and the mindful moments we embrace during our travels, each activity enriches our lives in unique ways. Alongside these passions, we also explore mental health topics drawn from our private practice at PETER BOURQUE NP, blending physical activity with emotional well-being.

This blog shares our experiences and insights, hoping to inspire you to find your own balance between adventure and mindfulness.

Finding Focus on the Golf Course

Golf is more than a sport for us; it’s a practice in patience, precision, and presence. Each round offers a fresh challenge, whether it’s mastering a tricky green or adjusting to changing weather.

  • Mental clarity: Golf demands concentration and calm. We use breathing techniques to stay centered before each swing.

  • Physical benefits: Walking the course and swinging improve endurance and flexibility.

  • Social connection: Playing with friends or new acquaintances creates a supportive community.

One memorable day, we played a course surrounded by towering pines and rolling hills. The peaceful environment helped us reset mentally, reminding us how nature supports mental health.

Recent Golf Outing 4/3/2026

We recently enjoyed a fantastic foursome at Myrtle Beach National Country Club with my husband Peter and our friends Kevin and Frank. The course we played was at Kings North, also known as "The Gambler."

Fishing and Boating Adventure

Boating opens a different kind of adventure. The vastness of the water invites reflection and a sense of freedom.

  • Stress relief: The gentle rocking of the boat and rhythmic sound of water soothe the mind.

  • Exploration: We discover hidden coves and quiet beaches unreachable by foot.

  • Skill-building: Navigating currents and weather sharpens our decision-making and teamwork.

On a recent trip 4/4/2026, we anchored near the Ocean Isle Bridge in North Carolina to spend sometime fishing at sunset. The calm water mirrored the sky’s colors, creating a perfect moment to practice mindfulness and gratitude.

During that trip, I captured some wonderful moments while fishing and boating with my husband Peter and our friend Kevin. We explored the Intercoastal Waterway and made a memorable trip to the Bird Island Reserve. For more information about this beautiful area, check out the details below.

Bird Island Reserve

The Bird Island Reserve is a protected area known for its diverse wildlife and natural beauty, making it a perfect spot for outdoor activities like fishing and boating.

The Joy of Fishing: Patience and Connection

Fishing combines patience with anticipation. It teaches us to slow down and appreciate the process rather than just the catch.

  • Mindfulness practice: Waiting quietly by the water sharpens awareness of the present moment.

  • Connection to nature: Observing wildlife and water conditions deepens our respect for the environment.

  • Shared experiences: Fishing trips often lead to meaningful conversations and bonding.

Gardening: Cultivating Growth and Calm

Gardening is another activity that grounds us. Tending plants requires patience and care, mirroring the attention we give to our mental health.

  • Therapeutic effects: Working with soil and plants reduces anxiety and promotes relaxation.

  • Learning cycles: Watching seeds grow reminds us that progress takes time.

  • Healthy habits: Growing vegetables encourages mindful eating and connection to food sources.

Our garden includes herbs, vegetables, and flowers. Each season brings new lessons about resilience and renewal.

Traveling with Intention and Mindfulness

Trip to Hawaii - October 2025

In October 2025, we marked Peter's birthday with an unforgettable journey to Hawaii. Our adventure began on The Big Island, where we explored the entire island in our Jeep Wrangler, guided by the Shaka tour app including the South Point also known as Ka Lae. South Point (Ka Lae) on the Big Island is the southernmost point in the USA, known for its dramatic 40-foot cliffs, dangerous ocean currents, and rich cultural history. It is a popular spot for cliff jumping, viewing ancient Hawaiian mooring holes, and visiting the Kalalea Heiau shrine. The area is remote, windy, and offers rugged, scenic coastal views.

We also traveled to the enchanting old Hawaii, Kauai, staying at the Wyndham Bali Hai in the picturesque town of Princeville. Our trip included a visit to the scenic Hanalei Bay in the nearby town.

Travel broadens our horizons and offers opportunities for mindfulness and self-care.

  • Slowing down: We chose destinations that allowed time for reflection rather than rushing through attractions.

  • Cultural immersion: Engaging with local traditions deepened our understanding and empathy.

  • Mental health focus: We incorporated journaling and meditation into our routines to process our experiences.

During this trip, we spent our mornings walking along tranquil beaches and our evenings participating in guided meditation. This balance allowed us to return home refreshed and centered.

Integrating Mental Health into Our Adventures

Our private practice at PETER BOURQUE NP informs how we approach these activities. We see firsthand how physical activity and mindfulness support mental well-being.

  • Stress management: Activities like golfing and boating help reduce cortisol levels.

  • Emotional resilience: Facing challenges outdoors builds confidence and coping skills.

  • Community support: Sharing adventures strengthens social bonds, which are vital for mental health.

We encourage others to find activities that bring joy and calm, adapting them to personal needs and preferences.

Practical Tips for Combining Adventure and Mindfulness

If you want to explore these activities, here are some tips to get started:

  • Set realistic goals: Start with short sessions and gradually increase time or difficulty.

  • Practice presence: Focus on your senses and surroundings rather than distractions.

  • Stay safe: Use proper equipment and follow guidelines for outdoor activities.

  • Reflect regularly: Keep a journal or share experiences with a friend to deepen awareness.

  • Balance activity and rest: Listen to your body and mind to avoid burnout.

Our adventures with Peter remind us that life’s richness comes from both movement and stillness. Whether on the golf course, the water, or in a garden, we find moments that nurture our bodies and minds. We invite you to explore your own passions and discover how they can support your well-being.
